The Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades has slammed Greek Cypriot politicians for leaking a document that revealed the existence of some discord between the Turkish and Greek Cypriot sides.
Anastasiades reportedly handed out documents to Greek Cypriot political party leaders that traveled to Geneva about the discords on 24 issues between the Turkish and Greek Cypriot sides.
After the documents were leaked to the press, however, Anastasiades has reportedly expressed his frustrations with the political party leaders, saying that he will never distribute such documents again.
Speaking to reporters yesterday, Turkey’s EU Minister and Chief Negotiator Ömer Çelik said Turkey is determined to find a common ground. Çelik said that it is a lack of vision that the EU blocks Ankara’s full membership due to the issue. Meanwhile, a U.N. representative said that most of the problematic issues have been sorted out and a solution is close.
Turkish and Greek Cypriot leaders gathered at the U.N. in Geneva on Monday to discuss some final issues, which if resolved, could see the island reunified after four decades of division.
Amid the talks in Geneva will be a meeting of representatives of Greece, the U.K. and Turkey today. U.K. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson is expected to represent the U.K. in the talks.
Previously in February 2016 there was another leak incident. The details of negotiations between Turkish and Greek Cyprus over the reunification of the island were disclosed by Democratic Party (DISY) officials who leaked a document to the press.
